The Farm

Wyndell Cruck Cottage overlooks the farmyard which is shared with the farmhouse where we live.

There are a number of outbuildings, including the secured ruins of an old cruck barn, a series of other old outbuildings and an old two-seater privy.

Spaciousness

Although we are no longer a working farm, we are surrounded by fields and woods. 

There is ample space to sit and eat outside. 

Walking & Cycling

Footpaths from the cottage lead you to a range of attractive places within a mile, including heath, woodland, gritstone crags, on-road cycle routes, and reservoirs as well as walks in The Dark Peak (maps available to borrow). 

The Approach

The drive up to the farm is up an unmetalled track with overhanging branches, too narrow for anything larger than a transit van. We cannot take any responsibility for any damage caused to vehicles, but we have a two-wheel-drive fiat panda which copes well with the track. 

The yard is unpaved. It has parking for up to six visiting cars. 

Wildlife (sorry, no pets)

We encourage wildlife right up to the front door so the yard and the site have a wild feel with woodpiles and long grass. Nature does not like it neat and tidy! In order that wildlife can feel safe here, we’re sorry to say “no dogs.” 

The Earth

All the buildings and walls here have been built from the local millstone grit, dug from the ground beneath our feet. Overlaying this bedrock is peat, much of it now washed and blown away. Here on this hill our soil is thin sand- the gritstone rock eroding.

In the spring, woods are full of bluebells, then wild foxgloves standing against north-facing field walls. Moors turn white with cotton grass in a wet year, then purple with heather in August. Add to this the birdsong.
